Replace the bathroom toilet seat
How to buy and install a new toilet seat
Replacing the toilet seat yourself is a great way to save time and money. However, before proceeding with this small DIY operation it is necessary to take note of some important characteristics.
Toilet seats are subjected to daily wear and tear, and come to think of it, toilet seat hinges are operated over and over again during the day. Also for this reason, when purchasing and choosing a replacement toilet seat, it is essential to focus on a quality product capable of ensuring excellent performance over time.
Before proceeding with the purchase you will have to evaluate which of the toilet seats on sale is compatible with your bathroom fixture.
How to correctly take measurements for the toilet seat
An important thing to remember (obvious, but which risks being misunderstood) is that you should not take the measurements of the toilet seat but of the vase: to do this, follow these measurement steps.
- Pot width (X)
- Distance between holes and distance between holes/bottom of the pot (Y)
- Distance between pot holes (Z)
Here is the correct way to measure the width of the vase (X)
Shown here is the measurement of the distance between the midpoint between the two holes and the front edge of the vase (Y)
Shown here is how the wheelbase (Z) is measured
Toilet seat, how to identify the type of hinges
Once you have taken the measurements, identify the type of hinges that the vase has:
Pass-through hinge screwable from below (A)
Oblique pass-through hinge screwable from below (B)
Expansion hinge screwable from above (C)
Oblique hinge screwable from above (D)
This procedure is also very important, as the type of hinges differs from model to model.
Furthermore, the hinges can be standard (normal closing of the seat) and slow or soft close (slow closing).
The shape of the toilet seat
Choose the shape of the seat obviously based on your toilet: below are the most common shapes you can find.

The materials of the toilet seat
The toilet seat covers can be made of different materials, depending on the production costs and therefore the costs to the customer.
There are plastic seats (the cheapest ones), wooden ones (obviously with warmer, more expensive colours), those in thermosetting resin.
Then there is Duroplast (a material that feels like ceramic to the touch) and Tecnoplast (a more resistant plastic).
These are the most common materials for making toilet seat covers.
